Fearless

I am fearless because I choose to be.

Fearless Kathakali

This painting is done in acrylics on canvas and is approx. 2.5 x 5 feet. The painting was a response to a particularly angry moment for me. A moment in which a dear friend called me while she sat huddled with her children, fearful for her safety as her husband unleashed more of his uncontrolled aggression . My friend- a victim of domestic abuse, of patriarchal mindsets and of public apathy.

I wrote these words for my friend when she was still fearful – today she is fearful no more. But fearless and powerful. I applaud that!

A limited edition single print of this painting is my contribution to The Madder Moon Fearless Initiative.

In early January, in response to the horrific rape in Delhi, my friend and fellow artist Shilo Shiv Suleman made an online call for entries of posters to affirm women’s right to be fearless and free.  To take back the night as it were… Within a short space of time, she was flooded with hundreds of posters from artists and designers, professionals and hobbyists – contributors of many nationalities from many countries. The movement grew and has now blossomed into something beautiful, strong and moving. Shilo has since taken these posters to Delhi and the gathering of the ‘One billion rising

@ India Pied-a-terre- Yes everyone should feel safe in their own homes but also outside- on the streets… I sometimes feel frightened of where we are headed as a people 🙁
