Chica
Approx. 12×14 inches
Acrylics on Canvas
.
This is Sonya’s beautiful Chica. The black with the tufts of white was so delicious to paint. As happens with older doggies and older humans, I might add, white flecks start to appear in stray places. Sometimes one does not notice them. We had a couple of video calls with Sonya, telling me in real time that ‘yeah, she does have some white here. And oh, this side is a lot darker….’ 🙂 Of course, it helps that I had multiple pictures of Chica to study while painting.

Sonya @sonyabalasubramanyam reached out to me to immortalise her baby on canvas as the little one was now getting on in years. This commission is special because Sonya was my first paying client for not one but two dog portraits. I had the absolute honour and privilege to paint Mojo and Sirius way back in 2012. You can see those work-in-progress pictures and the final finished portraits here.
Her faith gave me the quiet courage to start painting portraits and the confidence to charge for them.
Thank you!

I have to say that when I told her that I now charge substantially more than I did in 2012, she did not bat an eyelid. Just said ‘Yes- go ahead’.
Thank you, Sonya, for respecting my craft and the work I do.
