Experiments on post production waste paper

The experimentation continues! My studio is my safe space. A space to explore and push boundaries. My work with pen and inks has been well received over the years, so the logical next step was to take it further and explore surfaces. You all know my penchant for not wasting anything if it has life in it. I have decided to paint on the post production waste paper left over from my many experiments with digital printing. Except the printing inks had a mind of their own so I added mixed media – a LOT of it 🙂

I decided to tape one of the recent mixed media explorations onto an external window in the studio. It gets direct and very harsh sunlight for most of the day. I plan to leave the painting taped up for a few days to see how the pigments and the paper itself react to sunlight.
.
Most watercolours will fade over the years if subjected to harsh light. I know the Camel pen and inks do fade a little. Though even after some 25 years, they look good, as testified by clients who bought the paintings in the late 90s and early 2000s.
.
Do you see the outline of a hand and a face in the image? It is actually on the back of the painting. I must have given the paper to some child to scribble on over the years 🙂
.
You can imagine just how harsh the light is for one to be able to see the painting through the paper. The right side is facing outside!
And it is an overcast day…

Wish me luck!
