It is no secret that I love painting portraits of rustic men. And over the years, I have painted many.
Why do you think I hardly ever leave the studio? I am surrounded by gorgeous men, and they don’t talk back!! My friend Gumi’s wise words 🙂
My friend and fellow artist @gumimalhotra has been a long supporter of my work. She owns quite a few tiny gems from my studio. She bought these two pieces to give to a friend in Mumbai. The friend sent her back this image of my men framed in gold!
What can I say – I love them. I usually go understated. I was very surprised that someone chose to frame them in gold.
This is beginning to grow on me ????
I think I like it because it is so unexpected. And it reminds me of old Renaissance portraits/ paintings that are framed in gold/ornate frames.
What a wonderful way to see how others see my work – the contrast! The other pictures are to show you how much the background and framing options change the way a piece can be perceived.
During the lockdown, I painted a lot of these tiny portraits on brown paper packaging that came in with various purchases. I had run out of ‘art’ paper, and the enforced stay-at-home was driving me stir-crazy. Even the wood support is discarded wood from when we remodelled the kitchen years before that. I don’t throw anything out, especially if I see that it can serve some purpose. But that is a story for a different post.

I still have a few pieces from this series – do check back with me if you are interested in owning or gifting one (or a few!). They are incredibly inexpensive since this lot was painted under the Affordable Art Series. The newer lot is not!????
