This is a commission piece that I managed to complete in record time – about a week from the first phone call to when it reached the client’s home in Mumbai. I surprised myself!

The piece celebrates 60 years of the gentleman’s life and achievements. He was born, studied and got married in Indore, India and then moved to Zimbabwe in 2003, where he set up a cotton ginning factory and bought a textile factory to expand the business. He founded and owns the largest-selling brand of cooking oil and other products called Zimgold. He owns a private plane, was gifted an Audemars Piguet watch and owns a Bentley with a number plate ‘0000’. The piece also depicts his two sons, their wives and the two grandkids with whom he loves to play board games. He is a fan of old music and playing cards. Candy Crush is his indulgence.
These are just some of the little bits depicted on the canvas.

The best part about a commission like this is that I get to live vicariously through other people’s lives. There are many conversations, both spoken and written, that let me have a peek into the client’s life and family. In this case, his niece commissioned the work, but with all the information I asked for, I understand that the entire extended family was involved in getting me the old photographs and information on relevant dates and the like. I wish I had the time to incorporate more of those details into the finished piece, but…

I have long admired @Drewstruzans work, and this piece allowed me to use his style in part. Though I would have liked to add one or two more colours for dramatic flair. But this is where the client’s wishes become paramount 🙂 She wanted an old-world monochromatic vibe for the whole piece.
I think I delivered – What say?

The idea for ‘Vintage’ and ‘Aged to Perfection’ came from a bottle of Jack Daniel’s that was sitting on my kitchen counter.😊
