She was supposed to be ebony, but the paper would not let me go that dark. I decided to let the painting do its own thing. Towards the end, I used every medium available to get the right expression I wanted. I learnt a lot and got a painting I am happy with. We fought – quite a bit – the paper and I. I think I won in the end! I am confident I will figure out the skin colour in the next few weeks.
I am enjoying this new series of sketched paintings, for want of a better word. I love the spontaneity…
