When Mrs Chari contacted me late last year to paint her son’s wedding, I was surprised. I don’t usually do this kind of painting. But the call came within a few weeks of another similar request. So I decided to follow where the universe was leading me 🙂
@amychaz wanted a quick almost impressionist capture of some moments at the wedding. She was generous and invited me to the wedding to take pictures. I said no and that I would work from photographs that the wedding photographer provided. And so the journey began. Lots of photographs and lots of discussions later we arrived here. the fact that the clients live in Australia and the wedding pictures took time – sorta delayed the whole thing.

.
One of the pitfalls of working from pictures is that the client tends to see details in hindsight just as I do! The result becomes a tad bit more than an impressionist style but still not as detail-oriented as my usual portraiture.
The Chari’s were very specific about what they wanted added to the final image right down to the size. Due to the nature of reference pictures, I could not add them all but we arrived at a happy compromise on what was possible.

.
Left to me I would have omitted all the background details and just concentrated on the happy couple. Maybe add a few hints of the banana leaves and the hanging flowers. Like a sprig peeping in from one corner…
However, I have to say I like how these turned out.
The stunning couple had a beautiful wedding. You can see it featured in the Condé Nast Traveller here-
